MotU Creator Spotlight: The Normal Quesadilla Maker that Definitely Can’t Talk
To celebrate raising $7,000 (82%) towards our Kickstarter goal, we’re posting a special creator spotlight! This one features frequent VBC collaborator and writer of “The Normal Quesadilla Maker that Definitely Can’t Talk”, Sean Ian Mills. Find this comic in the Musuem of the Uncanny anthology, which has 4 days left on Kickstarter.
How long have you been creating comics or working in your role?
Sean Ian Mills: 10ish years.
Who or what are some of your creative influences?
SIM: Brian Michael Bendis, Scott Snyder, Matt Fraction and, regrettably, Joss Whedon, but only his writing.
What drew you to working on indie comics in particular?
SIM: The dream will always be to write comics professionally, and the best way to do that is to start in indie comics by making your own. I’ve always wanted to be a writer, and somewhere along the line I realized I would be better at writing comics than novels.
What inspired you to write this particular story?
SIM: There was a picture I saw online of a talking toaster (and Brave Little Toaster was one of my favorite movies as a kid), so I started thinking about ideas for talking appliances and what might be a fun twist/message to convey with the idea. Toasters were, clearly, well-trodden ground, so I wanted a similar kitchen appliance that would be funnier, hence a quesadilla maker. I bought one once and only used it twice before giving it to my sister. It just didn’t make very good quesadillas, at least not compared to what I was pulling off in a stovetop pan.
If the object in your story were real, would you want to see it in the museum—or avoid it at all costs?
SIM: I would absolutely want to see a talking quesadilla maker!
What are some other comics or projects you’ve worked on (past or current)?
SIM: I am one of the co-creators of the Gamer Girl & Vixen series at Very Big Comics, and we’re currently working on some short stories and the next big graphic novel in that series! I’m also, on the side, putting together the first issue of my own original solo series, Cover Bard.
Which project are you proudest of, and why?
SIM: Gamer Girl & Vixen has been such a blast to write and create. Every would-be comic book writer dreams up their own expansive superhero world, so much so that it seems a little silly, but I’m very proud of the one we’re creating and the stories we’re telling.
Are you working on anything exciting right now that you’d like to share?
SIM: The first issue of my fantasy series, Cover Bard, should be ready to go by the end of the year, so that will be exciting. We’re also going to have more Gamer Girl & Vixen short comics to share with the world, probably by this summer!
How can we find you online and learn more about your work?
